Bournemouth Airport (EGHH): A Historic Gateway to Southern England

Bournemouth Airport, formerly known as Hurn Airport and Bournemouth International Airport, is located 3.5 nautical miles (6.5 km; 4.0 mi) north-northeast of Bournemouth in the picturesque south of England.

A Rich History

The site began its journey as RAF Hurn in 1941, playing a key role during World War II. In 1944, it transitioned to civil control, marking the start of its significance in commercial aviation. From 1944 to 1946, Bournemouth Airport briefly held the distinction of being London's international airport before the opening of Heathrow.
Hurn served as London's international airport, until the opening of facilities at Heathrow.
Commercial services at the airport resumed in the late 1950s, paving the way for its evolution into a modern aviation hub.

Jersey Airport (EGJJ): A Historic Gateway to the Channel Islands

Located in the parish of Saint Peter, just 4 nautical miles (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) west-northwest of Saint Helier, Jersey Airport serves as the main international gateway to Jersey in the Channel Islands.

Aviation Before the Airport

Before 1937, air service to Jersey involved biplanes and seaplanes landing on the beach at Saint Aubin's Bay. Airlines such as Jersey Airways and Imperial Airways operated under challenging conditions governed by tides. Aircraft facing mechanical issues were dragged up slipways until the tide receded. Public access to the makeshift landing area further complicated operations
It was also difficult to prevent public members from walking across the landing area, and any aircraft that had mechanical problems had to be dragged up the slipways until the tide receded.

The Airport’s Evolution

Recognizing the need for a proper facility, the States of Jersey commissioned the construction of an airport, which officially opened on March 10, 1937.

Initial Infrastructure:

The airport featured four grass runways, the longest being 2,940 feet (896 m), with a concrete centerline for durability.

World War II Developments:

During the German occupation, the Luftwaffe added concrete taxiways and built hangars. One of these, the Jersey Airlines hangar, still exists but is no longer in use.

Post-War Enhancements:

A tarmac runway measuring 4,200 feet (1,280 m) was opened in 1952, replacing the grass strips. A unique feature of the 1950s was a traffic-light system to manage vehicles crossing the road between Les Quennevais and the airport during aircraft movements.

Today, Jersey Airport serves as a hub for various airlines offering regular scheduled, seasonal, and charter flights. These operators include:

Aer Lingus Regional.
British Airways.
Eastern Airways.
easyJet.
Eurowings
Jet2.com
Lübeck Air.
Lufthansa.
Volotea.
